The Spill: Reviewed

There are theories going around that the episode "The Lilo" was actually episode five and that Nick had aired it for the sake of being a season five premiere and the episode "The Spill" is the real first episode of the season. I have to say that those people could be right, but we will find out for certain if "The Lilo" airs again as the fifth episode. For now, watch the episode here! Or here!

From this point on, the post contains spoilers about the episode. Read at your own discretion.

In this episode, the Winx Club promote their concert and Roxy reveals that she has been accepted into Alfea. As usual, everyone meets up at the Frutti Music Bar and Aisha feels particularly lonely after Nabu sacrificed himself to save the fairies of Earth from the Black Circle's portal into the abyss. The fairies and specialists watch a live stream of the coronation ceremony of Nereus, the next king of the sea of Andros. The ceremony is interrupted by Nereus's jealous twin brother Tritannus and is captured. On Earth, an oil platform near the Gardenia catches fire due to negligence and it is up to the Winx Club (sans Roxy) and the specialists to save the workers and stop the ensuing oil spill.

Of course, the specialists don't get new outfits.
First of all, Sky got another haircut. This time, from the royal barber and it's actually more obvious than last season's. Can someone please fix this man's hair? After eight years of production, all the designers could come up was something that looks like a bad copy of Brandon's cut? They have the internet and millions of hair magazines at their disposal and we get this?

Brandon, who are you to criticise? You gave Stella
a compact in season three and a ring with a huge
rock in season four.
Oh, and let's not forget another "royal trinket" that Sky loses: the Pendant of Eraklyon. One would think that he would have learned his lesson when he sold the seal of Eraklyon in the last season.

Seriously, who keeps entrusting this crowned prince with all this jewelry? You read that correctly. Sky is suddenly a crowned prince again. Nick and Rainbow better have a good and logical explanation about this. I have a gut feeling that this may have to do with the fact that Diaspro is making a return this season.

At the Frutti Music Bar, Bloom and gang decide to fly around and have a show of magic to promote their concert at the bar the next day. Did the Winx Club not teach Roxy to use her magic for good and the benefit of others in "Magic Lessons" (otherwise known as "The New Witch in Town")? I am fairly certain that in season one, the fairies were taught to not abuse their powers. So why are they using magic in such an ostentatious way to promote their show? Fireworks, aerial acrobatics and a flaming dragon is a little over doing it, isn't it? The Winx Club are really getting into a gray area about how to use magic, because that display of magic seemed like it was used for personal ends. Luckily, they saved face by turning their concert into a benefit for the victims of the oil spill at the end of the episode.

Fireworks, flaming dragons and music...it's starting to look like a circus now.
That is a pretty lengthy acceptance letter.
Hey, Varanda of Callisto! Where was yours?
It also looks like Roxy is back and she is being hastily shipped off to Alfea the next day. Watching Bloom tell Roxy that she should stay on the beach to keep everyone safe was painful to say the least. Judging from "The Lilo," the Winx Club go back to Alfea and maybe we will see Roxy studying every now and then.

Those of you who paid close attention to the episode will have noticed these little pixie replacements (pictured at right). There are several of them in varying colours in the throne room. One of them even holds the cushion holding the Nereus's crown. Rumor has it that they are called "Pescix." We will have to wait and see what comes of these little guys.

As seen in the preview, Tritannus is having issues with the order of succession and he attacks his father and brother during the ceremony. Personally, I was more concerned about Tressa because she is really the only person (erm, mermaid) who could amount to being the equivalent of a female specialist every time she picks up a weapon. I want to see more of her and less of her brothers sadly. I keep thinking that this is what this series needs. A real female to pick up a weapon and fight like a specialist. (I'm not a fan of Aisha in this aspect because of that feminist phase she went through in season two.)

In other news, the specialists are suddenly much more competent at, well...everything than they were in the last eight years when they went to save the oil platform workers. The fairies and specialists are now capable of working as a cohesive unit to save lives. That was truly something I was not expecting.  I wanted to do a spit take when I saw them following the girls into the scene. I would also like to add that they improved the music for the action scenes as well as made them more intense than last season's. I bet Nickelodeon had a hand in this entire scene and I admit it: I am impressed. Good job, Nick!

Catch!
The Trix make an appearance at the end of the episode. They share a cell next to Tritannus's. I do not understand how a cell underwater meant for mermaids and tritons prevents them from escaping but apparently, it is much more effective than their previous prisons. Why not send them back to Omega? The only reason that they could get away was because they used the powers of the ice serpents to open the portal, if I am not mistaken. Still, they are back and terrifying as ever. You would think that they would get tired of fighting the fairies, but I guess they really want their revenge.

Overall, I am pleased with the episode and I await the next one with bated breath to see how the Trix escape and see what Tritannus is planning.

  2. Well, where to start, hmmm.

Okay so, I was kinda upset to see the Winx ditch Roxy like that. I wish she would've had more of a part in helping the Winx with the oil spill. I know she's not the most advanced fairy in the world, but c'mon, remember what she did to the vengance fairies?

Another thing that upset me was the way the Winx showed off. (Really, just for a concert?)Now that they are guardian fairies and more powreful ones at that, they should be more responsible with there powers. Miss Faragonda would not approve.

But, I like the new villian and his backround. I practically cheered when I saw Tressa again. (Although, I wish she would've helped fight.) It's going to be quite interesting to see what Tritannus and the Trix are going to plan.

Other than for a few kinks, I really enjoyed the episode and ma excited for the next one.

    1. come on
      they were just advertising

    2. It also might have partially been to make more humans believe in magic, so it may not have been completely frivolous.

    3. Anyone who frequents the Frutti Music Bar or lives in Gardenia would already know that magic is real. It is a little difficult not to believe that magic exist after the pseudo ice age and the plant invasion that happened in the last season thanks to Aurora and Diana. Let's not forget the many battles that happened all over town.

    4. And at the end of the last episode when they flew all over town.

  4. I mean I understand how people feel about the girls using their powers for advertising, but honestly all things considered, they thought they wouldn't have to fight anything for awhile. & since earth now has magic it's not that big of a deal. But yeah, it was a tad bit much.

So you demote Sky? They couldve at least given an explanation as to why & not acted as though I was stupid & that he was always a crown prince. Are we just pretending that both movies & season 4 never happened? & I agree, like if they couldn't do any better than that with his hair, they should've just left it the way it was. Also, I hope they don't plan to leave Aisha heartbroken all season, they can't just not bring Nabu back

. & As I've said before, how is it that these prisons are so easy to get out of, & how the trix never actually evolve. It is funny how Sky always manages to lose some great piece of jewelry.

    1. My friend and I had a discussion about Sky's demotion, we came to the conclusion that what happened in the first movie when Sky was gone for so long was basically just a coming of age ceremony because Sky won't become King until Erendor dies

  5. Sky's hair is awful. But what bothers me is that not one member of the Winx Club noticed that Aisha was heartbroken or had been crying. These are her best friends. How do you not notice when something is wrong with a friend? But when Bloom got upset about Daphne, Tecna and Flora were right there trying to comfort her. She didn't even know her sister.

    1. You're so right. I mean if anyone should notice your upset it should be your best friends. And they should've asked her if she needed someone to hang out with her while they were gettin all cuddly with their own BF's. I feel so bad for Aisha, I almost cried during the scene when she was looking at Nabu's picture. Nabu really needs to come back so Layla can be happy again (and for some strange reason I have a feeling that they little royal trinket that Sky dropped into the ocean will come back into play later in the season and possibly help out with that. But it's just a theroy so who know).

    2. I agree, like they wouldn't have made such a big deal out of it if it weren't going to tie in somewhere. & seriously? You've known her for 3 seasons & 2 movies, you really can't tell when there's something wrong with her?

    3. 4 seasons actually

    4. No, she wasnt in season 1

    5. Some friends, huh

    6. To be fair, some people can actually hide their tears from their friends to not trouble them and some friends are sensitive enough to not press an obvious issue. The girls are not required to share their personal lives with each other despite the fact that they live with each other.

    7. I agree. It will probably tie into a story involving Daphne and Nabu(let's hope). True people can hide their feelings but someone who cares will still know when something is wrong. Even if they don't say anything, actions always speak louder than words. They didn't even notice that she had left until Bloom said something.

  6. What I really want to know is why don't they just put the Trix back into that Do-Gooder's Boot Camp. I mean the only reason they got out of that place the first time was because Lord Darkar let them out, if LD didn't help the Trix escape they would more than likely still be there so wouldn't that make sense as the safest place to put those three. And at that how the heck did they get out of the Do-Gooder's Boot Camp the second time after season three?!?!?!?! Did someone jsut decided that for the fourth season they should put those witches in a underwater cell instead and hope for the best? If you ask me they should still be at that boot camp where, as Ms. Griffin put it, "they'll sweeten the evil out of them". Who ever is in charge of the Trix's security detail needs to be fired and replaced with someone competent enough to keep those three locked away FOR GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    1. I say fire the one that sent them to Omega first. They didnt check the witches' magic element and actually trap Icy in a prison of ICE. Pure stupidity right there.

    2. It was dumb, like she's ice, Chick was conjouring up ice coffins when she first appeared. Like what kind of prosecuter would do that?

      Delete
    3. If ever they had been sent to Obsidian had it been still existing they would have found a way to escape even from there.

  7. Okay I have some opinions, but because some of you have stated the obvious I'll just list the parts that bothered me.
    1) The winx advirtising the concert. It just felt something Nick would do. Can't explain.
    2) Sky's hair cut and the fact that he was demoted to crown prince.
    3) The trix being sent to another prison and knowing they can break out.
    4) Roxy not joining the fight.
Thats about it. It was a good first episode. And can someone please explain why Flora was the one reacting to the pollution in the water instead of Layla/Aisha

    1. Oh and one more thing. I hope this doesn't turn into something too educational.

      Delete
    2. You. Have a good point about Layla/Aisha, I mean she's the fairy of waves, so she should have felt it first, Eventually Flora would've felt it because of the plants deep in the sea, but Layla should've been affected somehow unless they're saying that water isnt alive, & Flora was feeling the algae.

      Delete
    3. flora is the fairy of nature and the ocean is part of nature

      Delete
    4. I wondered about that to. But I guess because of the nature in the ocean.

      Delete
    5. Yeah I understand why flora would have felt something because there are plants in the ocean. But Layla/Aisha should have felt something too.

    6. Everything that's not man-made is part of nature, including the air, land, sea and even what exists in space.

Water isn't sentient and it doesn't die or get hurt nor is itself or its structure affected because of the spill while algae and marine flora dies or suffers great damage from oil.

  8. I'm really surprised you didn't mention the scene where they somehow miraculously changed an entire oil rig. And of course it has to be something environmentally friendly. *rolls eyes* I'm watching this show for a story and some action, not for a public service announcement.

In July when I bought the comics, my dad finally learned what Winx Club is (he read the entire Wikipedia article OUT LOUD), and he watched this episode with me (okay, well, he was on the computer, but he was facing the TV!). He only said one thing:

Neptune: "Lock him in a dungeon so deep that he will never escape it"
Dad: "What other kind of dungeon is there? 'Yeah, just lock him in the low budget dungeon, where he'll likely break out'."

    I laughed so hard. XD

    1. Lol yeah seriously know what you mean about the public service annoucment. I mean I know kids need to know about keeping the earth clean, but we have been watching winx club for eight years becacause of the story and action not for the education.

    2. I thought about noting the super green message in the end, but it would be redundant and unnecessary. At that point, I just decided to enjoy the episode.

      Delete
    3. The "green" part had already been coming since season 4, with the Earth fairies' vengeance partly due to the humans destroying nature, and the trip to the Amazon jungle.

  9. Was I the only one bothered by Bloom when she said that it was up to Layla to save the guy when she was busy doing something. I mean why couldn't the other girls go down and help him while Layla was stopping from more oil spilling out?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Do you mean the guy who fell into the water? I think it might be because the other girls can't breathe underwater. If I'm not mistaken, Aisha cast a spell on herself before going in and I'm under the impression she can't give it to others. I'm not sure, especially considering what happened in season 3, but that would make the most sense to me.

  10. When Aisha was bringing the man up, I thought she would get her Harmonix. XD And I REALLY HOPE THEY BRING NABU BACK. Is he in a coma? Knowing Nick, probably. If he died that would be too harsh. Anyway, I wish Roxy could have fought. She could have helped the sea animals! Also Tessa is kinda like a female specialist since she KNOWS HOW TO FIGHT. Anyway are the Trix in charge of Tritannus or vice verus? Because the Trix did find him.

  11. I love that all of the girls are best friends but I wish that they would showcase the best friend pairings of the group more besides Bloom and Stella. Let's see what makes Aisha and Flora & Musa and Tecna best friends. When Aisha first came her and Musa were close now it seems as if they are not. And Flora and Bloom seem to be more of the best friends now.
