Animation Changes

So I knew there was this huge difference in animation styles in the original and the new Nick dub. But I didn't really get how much until I put them side by side.

Disregard, for a moment, all your lists of differences. Just look upon this in wonder.

I assume this is the same scene (albeit not the same exact moment). All I can say is, wow.

Okay, permission to list differences.
- Stella is in her princess dress (the new, pretty one), and not her Magic Stella. Is there a plot change, or can this be considered a relatively minor thing? When will the transformation sequence be introduced? Besides Bloom, will there even be an individual sequence, or will it just be Bloom and then the group, like it was in the trailer?
-Gardenia in the background looks brighter, and more like a city. From Season 4, you can get that it's really big, as opposed to the smaller town I thought it was in Seasons 1-3. This animation looks more big city to me.
- Different outfits. Yeah. Duh.
- The style seems more anime. And the style seems to make the characters look younger, something I've noticed before. If I put first season and fourth season Bloom side by side, first season has always looked older to me. It's the eyes.

Anyway, do you like it more now that you see it side by side? Less? About the same? I'm tied- I do like it more, but I'm certainly going to miss the old era of Winx Club.

  1. I thought the Winx actually looked older after season 1. The animation seemed to change between season 1 and 2, most notably in Bloom's features. Her eyes got bigger, the bunches of hair over her shoulders vanished.

The animation in season 1 kind of struck me as.. cute. I don't mean this in an insulting way, I love it, but I still like the newer stuff better. Episode 1 of season 4 had me wanting to claw my eyes out over the Flash animation, but this trailer looks really good.

The brighter city background makes me wonder how much the specials have been influenced by season 4's animation. Even if they went back to the hand-drawn style, season 4 was BRIGHT. There were barely any dark scenes, and the backgrounds were full of light colors. The city in the trailer reminds me of that. While I'm on the topic, I'll just say I didn't really like that.

On a random note.. has anyone noticed that Winx hands are almost always posed with the middle and ring fingers practically glued together? A prime example is Stella's right hand in the top picture here. It's weird, hands don't pose like that naturally.. do they? Sorry for the essay, I'll shush now.

  2. Hmm, personally, I think I'm going to miss the old version. I find the girls looked older after season one, not the other way around. The animation style was rather cute and it brings back fond memories. It makes me notice that years have passed for the Winx, and no immortality.

I prefer the darker city, because it makes the scene look more intense and more...magical. So, I'll definitely miss the old animation.

  3. Yeah,i totally agree with Hannah! Animation from season 1-season 4 was changing, and changing and they in every season looked more older and older, which is really good.Makes cartoon more real. And i think outfits helped it too, they had in first too seasons like just some ordinary outfits, jeans, skirts not too much details, and then in season 2,they already got little more "serious" clothes, like Stella got dress, then Musa also got new hair, which too made her looks +cutter+diffrent+older like 3 in 1 lol So im gonna miss the old animation too, though this one may look clearer,but...

I think some people's hands may pose naturally that way. I myself have looked down at my hand to see my middle and ring fingers together (but my hand isn't stretched).

Anyway, I like both versions, but I think Nick's version is clearer and lovelier. I've fallen in love with Bloom's eyes.

  5. I've heard they are using a different art program then the one used by the Italian company. This was to give a more familiar-feeling program to those working on the story translations into english. It also enables more fluid motions in animations.
Although it's nice to hear that they're trying different styles to create a better show, I still prefer the old Winx Club animations. I'm just a sucker for classics.

I guess making backgrounds is easier now because they have a 3D constructed Gardenia and it's easier. (One has to wonder where they will go for the 5th and 6th season.)

As for the art style, it has progressively gotten more streamlined, making them look younger with the bigger eyes, which I'm okay with to an extent before they start looking like clones of each other. I felt that they started to lose their individuality as their eyes started getting uniformed. I find it ironic that their boyfriends have more individuality with their different face models.

Art style aside, I wish that someone would do something about the writing. Bloom seemed more pure-hearted and sincere in season one compared to her season four and the movies counterpart where she keeps doubting Sky.

I noticed one thing is that in seasons 1-3 Gardenia look so plain. But in season 4 it look like a real city.

  10. In seasons 1-3, Gardenia was to me, a small town, now it's like a city. Stay consisit, Nickolen! unlike a certion,*cough, cough* 4kids.

  11. I'm going to miss the old animation alot . I also didn't like how they kinda made them so perfect and all while in the old season 1 bloom was kinda bit duller and gradually became prettier in the art but it looks like they made them all perfect right off the bat .

  13. I'm glad there are so many different opinions here. I'm "sucker for classics" too. And it looked as if it was more hand-made and with more effort. Season 4 seems all too much computer-animated to me. And choices Americans have made haven't always been that good(4kids) so pardon me for being sceptic.
About the colours: Real world isn't that colorful and I liked thee old darker colours. It just seems Winx Club is turning more and more girlish. Like for younger and younger children.

About the eyes - does EVERYTHING has to look like anime. A little individuality is nice. I agree with Kikurukina Bal Des'cagel about the personality issue.

  18. HEY! That's Bloom's season two/three/beginning of four outfit! Keep her outfit! They can tweak it, but I hope they give them different outfits. And I LOVE Stella's princess dress! <3

  21. you now what i have noticed in season one through four.... THERE VOICES CHANGE DRAMATICLY! Techna jad a cool ebglish acent then it was changed to American what the crap! Then Sky's voicechanged from a dreamy teen to like a a ten year old boy in season four. I loved his season 1-3 voice. It was awesome! Then Flor'a voice changed from a calm cool voice to an overexcited girl. Not to be a whinner i love all the wix series its just the new voices through me off the show. Why did they have to change their voies....Why!
